Technical FAQ - Application

How do I use trueCABLE tools?

Our Cable Academy has how-to blogs for just about everything, including how to use our catalog of tools! They have step-by-step instructions, detailed pictures, and even embedded videos so you can work with our tools alongside our technical experts!

Can I crimp in any order?

No, the Ethernet protocol will only operate correctly if you use either T568A or T568B. It is very important to choose only one and use it throughout the project. Read more about this in our Cable Academy blog T568a vs T568b, Which to use.

Can I re-terminate an Ethernet cable?

All of our keystone jacks and field term plugs can be re-terminated up to twenty times. 8P8C connectors cannot be re-terminated.

How close can I run my Ethernet next to electrical wires?

Great question, and the rules differ between unshielded and shielded Ethernet cables. The general advice is to avoid electrical circuits and other potential EMI sources when you can, but there are distance rules (per the NEC/NFPA 70) and recommend..

Do nearby Ethernet cables interfere with each other?

Yes, this occurs through a phenomenon known as "alien crosstalk" (ANEXT). Read all about it in our Cable Academy blog article When Aliens Attack! Avoiding Ethernet Alien Crosstalk.

How much power can I safely inject over your Ethernet cable for PoE devices?

Also known as 4PPoE, 802.3bt, and PoE++, all of our Ethernet cables are rated to handle up to 100W PoE. Limitations, however, arise with cable bundle size and the use of conduit. We have a handy chart for this!. Please see our blog Power over..

How far can I run Ethernet cable and still get a good signal?

Generally speaking, the maximum Ethernet Channel length is 328ft. This is inclusive of a 295ft "permanent link" and 33ft of 24 AWG patch cords at either end. That said, permitted lengths will vary by ambient temperatures, and gauge of patch cords use

Can I install an Ethernet cable inside a commercial freezer?

It depends on the temperature of the freezer. The minimum operating temperature for our cable products is -40°F (which also happens to be equal to -40°C).

How tightly can I bend or wind a particular cable?

The minimum bend radius is listed on the specification sheet for every cable we offer. Spec sheets can be found on our product detail pages.

What size staples do I need for my cable?

It is not recommended to use all-metal staples for Ethernet cables. Coaxial staples with plastic protectors may be used, but it's important to find a size that will not constrict the cable jacket. If the cable jacket diameter is less than 6.3 mm..

What hardware should I use to support a messenger wire?

For small installations, eye bolts and cable staples will be more than adequate for the support of the messenger. Messenger clamps and dead-end hardware can be sourced through lineman's supply distributors.

How far apart should messenger wire supports be?

A maximum of 230 feet. Unless you're spanning a river or something, your intervals will be much shorter. Otherwise, the amount of sag involved will require using poles that are ridiculously tall. Check out our Outdoor Ethernet Messenger Wire Support

I terminated my Ethernet cable and can only achieve 10 Mb/s speeds. What is wrong?

There is something amiss with a termination or your switching gear. If not the switching gear, 100 Mb/s indicates that not all conductors are making proper electrical contact. For 1G and above speeds, all conductors must be making good electrical..

During installation, I've been asking others to avoid stepping on the cable. Is that necessary?

Yes; good job. Ethernet cable is not just some wires twisted up in an insulator. It is a self-contained data transmission system that will not function properly if it is physically deformed.

How do I determine what size conduit I need for Ethernet or coaxial cable?

This table provides the initial recommended 40% fill capacity for Ethernet and coaxial cable based on conduit trade size and cable jacket diameter. Take note that conduit less than 3/4” (3/4 trade size) is not recommended for communications cable ins
